A mention about breaking Division I into a top tier. The NCAA president said in the letter that any school that joins this newly created tier would be required to do two things. First, within the framework of Title IX, invest at least $30,000 per year into an enhanced educational trust fund for at least half of the institution’s eligible student-athletes. Second, committ to work with their peer institutions in this subdivision to create rules that may differ from the rules in place for the rest of Division I. Those rules could include a wide range of policies, such as scholarship commitment and roster size, recruitment, transfers or NIL. NCAA president proposes new tier for ‘highest resourced’ schools to compensate athletes directly
Sports is about to get really expensive.

Sounds to me like the NCAA is moving towards eventually making Division I "pay to play" and will require every school to have that 30,000 fund to pay athletes directly. For schools like Ohio State, Michigan and Harvard, they can sneeze and have 30,000 dollars like it's nothing to participate.
Poor schools with zero resources like CSU will have to cut a lot of sports to remain at the highest level of collegiate athletics. I definitely think teams like Lacrosse, Fencing and Swimming could be cut to create money to remain in Division 1. Very very sad but it is the reality of the changing world.

I really think this will pop the bubble on DI and the total realignment begins. Football in marginal programs will need to re-evaluated. Midmajor conferences like the MAC would be directly impacted. Who is going to carry football at that level, don’t make money and carry a large payroll like that.
I’m betting that schools in the proposed higher division would have to field a football team. By definition, the Vikes would not be part of the discussion.
Recruitment and transfers would be greatly impacted. If the new division allows larger basketball rosters, then mid majors programs in conferences like the A10 could be impacted more than us. Then it’s a matter of the tournament time for teams not in the proposed higher division. I guess that’s us. Hmmm, what’s next?

they really are trying to weaken midmajors. Can't have anymore FAUs or Creightons.

they really are trying to weaken midmajors. Can't have anymore FAUs or Creightons. We all saw this. Understanding that this is football driven, I would like to see how this impacts basketball only conferernces like the Big East. For example if the Big East can ignore football and pay their other athletes, this may be an opening for some other non-football programs to re-align. However, that may force some other universities to drop football to be part of that re-alingment. The drop of football and other sports would be triggered by the $30K payment to 1/2 the players. The devil is in the details. This may present opportunities along with the risks.
