Figured I would take a glance at the stats over on KenPom to get a picture of what this team is looking like 20% or so through the season.
We are pretty staunch at offensive rebounding, ranking 26th in all of D1. We were 15th in D1 in offensive rebounding last year; nice to see that trend continue this year.
Three point shooting has been a pleasant surprise, as we are 88th in D1 at 36% from long distance, whereas last year we were 30% from three, and in the bottom 20 in D1 in three point shooting. Very nice to see that improvement.
In an odd quirk that maybe luck contributes to, CSU opponent's are shooting the 7th worst free throw percentage against us this year (denoted as FT% defense on KenPom, though there really isn't such a thing as there is no way to "Defend" a free throw). Hopefully that trend keeps up.
Our biggest issues are allowing opponents to get to the free throw line (286th in D1), and defensive rebounding, where we rank 348th in Division I. We were 358th in Division I last year in defensive rebounding/allowing opposing offensive rebounds. So that has been a consistent theme through Coach Robinson's tenure that isn't getting any better and very fair to ding him on for his performance as coach.
And of course as frankiemeatballs and user1 have mentioned, point guard and backup point guard remain huge holes. We are okay with Lowder as starting PG. Backup PG is a big hole. TJ Moss certainly would help with this team. If I am not mistaken, Coach Robinson said to the media after the Defiance game that TJ is dealing with a personal issue and they were just hoping to get him back at some point soon. So what he is dealing with could be any multitude of things, and it wouldn't be right to speculate. Just hoping to get him back.
The stretch upcoming where CSU is at Saint Mary's, at Kent State and at Bradley, I would be happy if CSU could win just one of those games. Would be nice to start conference play with a win @ysu on Wednesday.
