I hope they come up with enough money to hire quality assistants They have a significant amount of money for assistant coaches for a mid major. I have the number it won’t be an issue. Picking the right guys this time a year will be the bigger issue. Talked to two people who said hiring assistants won’t be an issue. Will be able to grab guys from other mid majors.

When does the AD search begin? It’s a wait and see hire for me. I have been asked to not comment publicly until after the announcement. A lot of good that did you. Goodman announced Dennis Gates has been hired.

I had said it was going to break. I was just asked not to be the one to do it online. That was a more then fair request. I talked to some of the people I know here over the phone this afternoon and told them about it.

Curious about how much the director of basketball operations position gets paid. It's been changing every year it seems

In my opinion the best change from Dennis Felton is that Gates is young, and hungry for success with this being his first coaching job. People will talk all day about him not having any local ties. I'm not sure that is as big a factor as some may think. If Gates can coach and recruit, he will do it and do it well regardless of where he is from. To me this is a wait and see hire. No reason to be upset or thrilled about it right now

Gary waters said when he was at Rutgers his biggest mistake was not hiring assistant with New Jersey ties. He corrected that here hiring Kimbrough. You just need an assistant with great relationships with local high school coaches. Felton didn't have that at all. Sonny Johnson even said Felton overlooked guys that were interested in Csu.

There are still a lot of players in the xfer portal. Convincing them to be a Vike may be the challenge. However given the time of year, some may be in the same boat as CSU (time is running out).

Any word on the assistant coaches and other staff onboarding? Rob Summers from James Madison is reportedly on board. He was also the head coach at Urbana University, located outside of Columbus.

Well, since this thread was already here from when we searched for Gates, I'll just bump it up to the top so people can post in here again. I don't have anything productive to add, just interested to see what others say and hear about what CSU is doing in the search

I haven’t mentioned Bruce Weber because he’s 65 and just stepped down after 3 really bad seasons. But he does make sense as a guy who’s had success and has a relationship with Garrett.

if Weber still has the "fire", he would obviously make a lot of sense to talk to...

I have several connections around college basketball no names yet but was told by a couple people they think it will be a power 5 assistant coach again. They said if they had to bet that’s what it would be. None of them were sold on Summers. They were unanimous that they thought it would be a short sighted move. Joyce they thought had some potential but they said there is no way they would trust him this quickly running his own program. Just hasn’t been an assistant long enough. Basically their thoughts were you just won back to back conference championships and a coach just got to parlay that into a massive payday at an SEC school. The program would be attractive to a lot of guys. The AD is highly thought of and that CSU could have a lot of options on the assistant front. Many guys that would not have considered the job last time. Zero reason to go with Summers or take a risk on Joyce. They said Joyce could be the guy after the next hire if the new coach wants some continuity.

I haven’t mentioned Bruce Weber because he’s 65 and just stepped down after 3 really bad seasons. But he does make sense as a guy who’s had success and has a relationship with Garrett. I guess some people could try to sell the Bruce Weber idea as a Gary Waters type hire, but the difference was Waters was 55 (Weber is 65), and Gary Waters was only 5 years removed from the Mid-Major level after leaving Kent State in 2001 and starting at CSU in 2006, whereas Bruce Weber last coached at a mid major 19 years ago in 2003 at Southern Illinois. Been at a Power 5 since 2003 at Illinois and Kansas State. That's a long time. The game has changed at the mid major level, a ton, since 2003. I can't really think of any parallels of coaches like Bruce Weber hired back to a mid major in their mid-60s after a couple decades away from mid major basketball. I just don't like the idea. Does a coach that old still have the fire and energy needed to build up a smaller D1 program? Or is he just taking the job to collect a few more paychecks before riding off into the sunset and calling it a career? My money would be strongly on the latter. I think we need to stick with the formula that worked to find Dennis Gates. Young Power 5 assistant that has been there under a top coach for many years, getting his first job and hungry to get himself a better job like Gates did. I am usually wrong about everything but just my thoughts.

If he doesn't follow Gates to Missouri Keeping Joyce would be great for continuity - and hopefully could keep the grads around for their bonus year. I wonder if Jermaine Henderson gets a look here also. Ohio roots, knows Garrett from K-State, and has familiarity with CSU. Whoever is brought in, I hope they can retain assistants and the players. With Basile leaving Wright St. and Oakland losing Cain the conference is wide open next year.
