I’m curious if the Horizon League will make any adjustments to the standings this year like they did with the weird formula last season. We’re already seeing an imbalance as some games are being cancelled and some new games have been scheduled, but not evenly across the board. For example, CSU had the hastily thrown together additional game vs. PFW but Oakland hasn’t had the chance to make up any of their 3 cancellations. There’s a total variance across the league where some have played as few as 8 conference games and some as many as 13.
In other news, Oakland has a really interesting schedule remaining. Somehow they’ve made it this far without playing WSU, NKU or Detroit, plus we still visit there to end the season. That’s 6 really tough games with only YSU and RMU as their other remaining games. It’s very possible they lose 2-3 more games, still giving CSU a chance at the top seed.

That is interesting. We have not played the 2 Wisc teams yet, UIC, or that indy team. In which I believe are all 4 worse than RMU or YSU. Having said that, there are no automatic Ws in the HL.

Good point. I forgot to mention that they have a game against IUPUI and we don’t. YSU is above the others, but Green Bay, UIC and Milwaukee (none of which we’ve played yet) are all above RMU in the standings (who we’ve played twice). Looking deeper, against the top half of the league were 8-2 and they’re 3-0. Add it all up and the basic summary is this: we’ve played more total games, more games against the top half of the league, we already beat WSU twice, and have not played IUPUI yet. They’ve played less total games, less against the top half, 0 against WSU, and 1 against IUPUI. They beat us head to head and they absolutely deserve to be in 1st place. Just something to point out if the HL does go to some alternative tie breaker, especially if we’re able to win at their place next month.

I’m still curious how this is going to play out. The official Horizon League standings list teams in order of winning percentage (5 win UDM ahead of 7 win YSU & PFW for 5th and 4 win UIC ahead of 5 win Milwaukee for 8th).
CSU has played 2 more games than Oakland. Is there a scenario where we have the same amount of losses but CSU is the champ? Would that happen even if Oakland sweeps CSU? The lack of clarity on this from the league is astounding.

The lack of clarity on this from the league is astounding. I thought it was mentioned more than once that the HL is going strictly by win percentage to determine the seeding (Then, I would assume head-to-head, etc... if there is a tie in win percentage). So, unless something changes, CSU will have more games played than Oakland. That could set up a scenario where CSU is (for example) 16-5 and Oakland is 15-5 and CSU would be percentage points ahead. So, even if Oakland sweeps them, if the above scenario plays out, CSU is the top seed. However, CSU could be 16-5 and Oakland 16-4 and Oakland goes because they have one less loss, and thus, a better win percentage. With Oakland losing tonight, CSU controls their own destiny. Now that Oakland has to play some of the better teams in the HL, they don't look quite as dominating.

We’re essentially two games up on Oakland then, as a tie in the loss column would mean CSU gets the tie breaker (as long as we don’t have 2 more games cancelled).

Oakland loses 2 in a row. Hopefully the Vikes keep the ball rolling in a positive direction. The standings are beginning to form 3 clusters of teams and not much separation in the clusters.

IUPUI is having open tryouts to finish the season if any of you have eligibility left.

IUPUI is having open tryouts to finish the season if any of you have eligibility left. Apparently they are down to 6 players. This week's games against UIC and IUPUI will be interesting. The bench should be able to get minutes.

IUPUI should just quit and The HL staff in Indy should resign. What's next, suit up farm animals?

IUPUI should just quit and The HL staff in Indy should resign. What's next, suit up farm animals? Yeah, this is bad. The debacle that is IUPUI and their terrible arena that they host the HLT in just keeps getting worse. I didn't think that was possible. The HL member institutions really need to band together and force them out of the league. That program is an embarrassment that drags down everyone else in the league in a major way. If anyone needed to drop down to D-2 (or drop their basketball program entirely), it's IUPUI.

What does the banning of UIC do to the HL tournament bracket? I’m guessing the 5 seed will also get a bye into the quarters.

Oakland and Wright state have the best starting 5 in the league, but very little depth. Oakland has even less than the raiders their starters are getting burned out. That's on Kampe recruiting a good core, but a weak bench

YSU 76 over Oakland 71 WSU 79 over Green Bay 62 N. Kentucky just stomped MKE - score is beatdown city 75 - 39.
It turns out that Oakland was feeding off of the weaker teams and is beginning to hit grind now. It also does not help they have such a small rotation.
WSU and N. Kentucky are not fading away.

Something to keep in mind here, WSU has played all of its games so they have one more game than us (after tonight). If we finished with the same amount of losses, they would get the tie breaker even though we swept them. It’s the opposite of what had been discussed with us and Oakland. Essentially, our two game lead on Oakland is three and our two game lead on WSU is one.

Oakland Starters are burned out, That's the problem. Great starting 5 but zero depth. Gates has a wider rotation. And the raiders bench is starting help more.

The HL went to winning percentage this year to determine seeds since not all teams will have the same amount of games played. Say we finish 15-4 and WSU finishes 16-4, they’d have a better winning percentage and would be the top seed. It’s the opposite with Oakland, if we finished 15-4 and they finished 13-4 we would be the top seed.

But we win the tie breaker if the record is the same because we swept them.

But we win the tie breaker if the record is the same because we swept them. Because of the uneven amount of games played, at the end of season the records can not be the same. Earlier in the year our contests with UIC and IUPUI were cancelled b/c of COVID. We did schedule an additional game with PFW; but the UIC game will not be made up. WSU was able to play the postponed games with N. Kentucky and Detroit. CSU will have 21 HL games vs WSU 22 HL games.

But we win the tie breaker if the record is the same because we swept them. Outside of WSU having a game get cancelled before the end of the season, it’s impossible for us to finish with the same amount of games. The head-to-head tiebreaker is irrelevant as they would only go to that tiebreaker if the winning percentages were the same. We need to finish with at least one less loss than WSU to win the regular season championship.

CSU (12-2) has 7 games remaining. UIC IUPUI @ PFW @ MIL @ GB @ Det @ Oak
WSU (12-4) has 6 games remaining. @ Mil NKU @ Oak @ Det YSU RM
Oakland (9-4) has 6 games remaining. @ RM Det WSU NKU PFW CSU
If WSU wins out, we have to go at least 6-1. If WSU loses 1, we can go 5-2. If WSU loses 2 and Oakland loses 1, we can go 4-3 and still be the regular season champion/top seed.
I'll be rooting for NKU and Oakland to beat WSU. Hopefully CSU can take care of that Oakland loss on our own, but just to be safe I'll be rooting for Det or NKU to beat Oakland first. I would be nice going into that last game not needing a win.

I don't think the guarantee exists any longer. Therefore it only influences the seeding in the HLT and once you get past the bottom 4 teams, it's going to be a battle no matter who you draw. The season boils down to winning the HLT.
