He would take the job if it was offered. That’s a top 30-40 job in basketball

Great news...Cincinnati hired the UNC-Greensboro coach... Oh thank Goodness, that Cincy job was starting to worry me. He wasn’t in on the job. He wasn’t in the top 3 I don’t believe he was in the top 5. I have a pretty good connection to the Cincy athletic department . The two jobs I was told that he was rumored to have the opportunity with was Penn State and Marquette. Penn State filled before our season ended. I got conflicting information from multiple people on that job. Had one person that was adamant he wasn’t getting the Penn State job and another who said he thought he could have gotten it and he thought he was the favorite for. The Marquette job was the one job that I thought he was actually going to land he had past history with the athletic department they moved on from their coach later which I thought was lining up more with our timeline and exit from the tourney. think the Shaka Smart falling out with Texas was a huge help for CSU. As I said a week or so ago all expectations are he will be returning to CSU.

Also for what it’s worth. There are some strange happenings within the Penn State athletic department today. It is a department that has a booster group that can cause havoc and division. James Franklin has tried to get himself out of the football job multiple times. There was a lot of innuendo and some accusations made through the grapevine. Take a look at Franklins recruiting class last year and how poorly it went especially inside of the state of PA. It was a historically the worst Penn State has ever done inside its own state. This wasn’t a fluke situation and it’s not because Franklin can’t recruit.

We dodged a bullet this time. Garrett said they were going to make an investment in Gates and the Athletic department as a whole. Maybe that's keep him here.

I never felt Penn State made much sense for him, outside of his connection with the AD.

Well this old thread has aged well. And will remain relevant for some time. Lotta good coaching jobs out there. Let's see what happens. But IF he were to move on who replaces him. For me it's a no brainers. ONE of his assistants. Maybe Rob Summers.

For me it's a no brainers. ONE of his assistants. Maybe Rob Summers. I’ve been intrigued by Summers as a potential replacement since he does have (non D1) head coaching experience. I’d love to keep him and Joyce on staff one way or another. Gates’ new contract has a decent buyout for CSU that will essentially fund at least one year of the new coach’s contract. That could be used to start at/near Gates’ current salary to attract more highly qualified candidates than when we were paying towards the lower third of the league. Are there any successful young low-major head coaches making significantly less than Gates who might consider CSU? Or former high-major head coach between jobs? Outside of a great fit there, I think I take my chances with the continuity of Summers/Joyce over another young assistant becoming a first time head coach.

I'm not worried about him leaving (this year). I hope you’re right. I’m curious as to why? I don't have any inside information. He just comes across as an individual that would not just leave after just 1 year after a renegotiated contract. Generally, that kind behavior (chasing $) tends to catch up to you later and is played out in public for D1 coaches.

I just think he’d be crazy to turn down a high major job paying multi-millions per year to stay at CSU for 500k and a chance at a 15 seed as a best case scenario. I think the restructured contract was more about rewarding him for resurrecting the program and building in a better buyout to help CSU when he inevitably leaves than it was actually keeping him here long term. My hope when he resigned was 2 more years so hopefully he does return, I’m just not banking on it.

Well let's see what happens.

Is it possible he's waiting for the Florida State for Hamilton retires I think that’s the only way we keep him longer term (and Hamilton is in his 70’s so it’s not too long).

Unless there is something he has very close ties to, I suspect he will make his move next year or the year after.

In looking through Twitter, it seems a lot of Missouri fans do not like the Gates hire for them. They feel he is a carbon copy of Cuonzo Martin whom they just fired.

This Mizzou thing is looking serious. We need to promote either Summers and the next assistant so we don't have massive transfers. We'll be rebuilding all over again. I really want to Keep Pryor and Young.
